Have you encountered a transgender patient in your practice? Do you have questions about why and how people change their gender? Do you know what the health and safety risks are for transgender or gender non-conforming people? If so, these events are for you. Please join us in a safe space for conversation and learning. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome and encouraged to attend!

This event will cover the basics of gender expression, gender identity, and language within the context of the health sciences. The presentation will be followed with a panel of trans-identified students and community members willing to share some personal stories and experiences, followed by a question and answer session. The event will be facilitated by three students in the School of Social Work.

This documentary that tells the story of Robert Eads, a transgender man who is dying of ovarian cancer. The film covers the challenges that Eads experiences when denied treatment for his condition, and profiles his family and community support network. The discussion will address stigma and discrimination, explore issues of healthcare access, and provide some ideas on being an ally to transgender individuals.

Discussion with Zeek Christopoulos, Tranzmission Asheville and the Robert Eads Memorial Health Project/Southern Comfort Conference

Geared towards future and current health providers and public health practitioners, this event will present an overview of health issues faced by transgender individuals, ranging from the gender transition process to risks related to HIV and unsafe hormones. This talk will also provide suggestions about creating a sensitive and welcoming environment for transgender folks in a clinical setting. There will be an opportunity for Q&A.
